About This Event

Come witness the premiere of a new work by Jace Eagle Bear, and selections from the film, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. To celebrate Asian Heritage Month this year, Gai Lan Ensemble presents a unique concert featuring a new composition by our own erhuist Jace Eagle Bear, and the music which inspired him, such as the soundtrack from “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”.“Qing” 青, is the Chinese word for the colour between blue and green. “Qing Yin” 青音, or Cyan Tones, means blue/green sound, evoking the colour and timbre of the concert itself. As a performance blending Chinese and western instruments, it’s something that also exists in-between.Joined by our friends Kensington Sinfonia, the concert will present works by living Canadian and Chinese composers including Jace Eagle Bear, Andrew Staniland, Tse Taishun (謝大順), and Li Bochan (李博禪), as well as some beloved traditional Chinese tunes.Gai Lan BIOGai Lan Ensemble nourishes your senses with their fresh repertoire, unique arrangements, and enthusiastic performances. Led by award-winning flutist Jiajia Li, the chamber ensemble is made up of the finest Chinese instrumentalists in Alberta. The members’ diverse musical experience — from Chinese opera, Chinese orchestra, classical, jazz and pop — resulted in Gai Lan’s wildly successful debut performance at Calgary's TD Chinatown Street Festival in 2022. Since then, Gai Lan has performed throughout Alberta. Notable shows include a concert at Studio Bell featuring Wāng-style Chinese pipa master Hao Yi-fan, a main stage performance at the Alberta Day 2025 Celebration, and an appearance in St. Albert for the Plaza Series last summer.
