Sandy Beach is the Elbow River park below River Park, not another name for the off-leash area on the ridge. The City lists picnic areas and shelters, playgrounds, pathways and canoe or raft access. Start here for a riverside picnic or play stop; choose River Park separately if its designated off-leash area is your destination.

Arrive at Sandy Beach, not the ridge above
Use the City-listed address, 1411 50 Avenue SW, and the official Sandy Beach map to choose your arrival point. The City describes the park as 33 hectares along the Elbow River, below River Park. That distinction matters when arranging a meeting: a pin for the park on the ridge is not the same destination as a picnic site by the river.
Check the map for the part of the park you want to use before setting out. For a visitor who needs a short or step-free route, confirm the actual entrance, surface and distance to the chosen facility rather than assuming every pathway has identical access.
Picnic areas and two kinds of playground
The City lists picnic areas and shelters, fire pits, BBQ stands, standard playgrounds and an inclusive playground. For a group picnic, check the City’s site-selection and booking information before promising a particular table or shelter. A listed fire pit is not confirmation that fires are permitted under the conditions on the day.
The inclusive playground has its own City information page. The City describes inclusive equipment as approachable by children and caregivers using mobility devices, with opportunities for active, quiet and creative play. That does not establish that every route through the wider park or every washroom is accessible; check the facilities your group will actually need.
River access is not a swimming guarantee
Canoe and raft access to the Elbow River is a listed park feature. It is not a statement that the river is supervised, suitable for every swimmer or safe under current water conditions. If you are planning a river trip, arrange the equipment, route and take-out separately from the picnic.
The City lists park hours as 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., with seasonal washrooms and water fountains. Bring drinking water and check facility availability before a cold-season visit. An open park gate does not guarantee a working fountain or an open washroom.
Sandy Beach and River Park have different roles
The City’s River Park page places it on the ridge above Sandy Beach and explicitly identifies a large designated off-leash area. The Sandy Beach page instead describes riverside picnic and play facilities. Do not transfer the ridge park’s off-leash designation to every part of the river park below it.
Keep a dog leashed unless the signs for the specific area explicitly permit otherwise. Use the River Park listing when that named off-leash area is the purpose of the outing, and the Sandy Beach map when choosing picnic sites, playgrounds or river access.
