A west-facing Calgary room can feel fine at noon and turn into a wall of glare by late afternoon. After sunset, the problem reverses: indoor lights make a shade that preserved the view by day much easier to see through from outside. Zebra blinds and double roller blinds can both help, but they solve those two moments differently.
First, separate daylight from night privacy
A light-filtering fabric is not automatically a privacy fabric. On a sunny afternoon, the outdoors is brighter than the room and a person inside may see out comfortably. At night, that lighting relationship flips. Before choosing any blind, decide what the window must do with the room lights on, not just when the sun is up.
If the room is a bedroom or faces a sidewalk, test the proposed closed position from outside where possible. Side gaps, mounting height and nearby sight lines matter as much as the fabric label.
Where zebra blinds fit
Zebra blinds alternate sheer and solid bands. Moving the bands changes how much light enters without always raising the blind. That makes them useful for a living room where the goal is to soften west light and keep some daytime view. The solid-band position can add privacy, but it is not a sealed blackout system. A screen-sensitive home office or a bedroom may need a denser fabric or a second layer.
Grouped windows deserve one measurement plan. If each cassette is mounted at a slightly different height, the bands will look out of line across the wall even when each blind fits its own opening.
When a double roller is the better answer
A double roller uses two separate fabrics on one opening. A screen layer can handle daytime glare and view; the second layer takes over for evening privacy or room darkening. It avoids asking one fabric to do opposing jobs. The trade-off is space: two rolls, a deeper headrail and the finished fabric stack need room above the glass. Handle clearance and the depth of an inside mount should be checked before anyone orders.
What Eco Blinds checks before quoting
Eco Blinds starts with the window direction, the hour glare becomes a problem, room use, privacy sight lines, recess depth and mounting options. The team then confirms fabric, controls, measurements and installation scope. There is no honest fixed price for a custom system until those choices are settled.
