Use the comparison checklistDefine the physical result
Describe the finished size rather than only the paper size. Include whether printing is single- or double-sided, how pages should be ordered and whether folding, stapling, binding or lamination is required. Ask the printer what file format and bleed settings it needs; do not assume a document that looks correct on screen is ready for production. For repeat work, keep an approved sample and the final production file together.
Choose between self-service and production help
Calgary Public Library publishes its printing service information for people who need document output. Its wireless printing instructions require a Library card and PIN. Read the public page for current conditions rather than assuming commercial finishing is available. A commercial printer may be the better enquiry for proofing, unusual stock or production quantities. Ask who checks the file, what the proof demonstrates and when approval becomes binding. Confirm collection or delivery arrangements separately from the printing deadline.
