Ask the office what basic information it needs before you send detailed or sensitive documents.

Make the first conversation useful

Prepare a short chronology, the names needed for a conflict check and the question you want answered. Let the lawyer explain which documents matter and what the next stage would involve. Ask whether the engagement is limited to advice on one issue or includes correspondence, negotiation or representation. If a deadline is approaching, state the date at intake and ask whether the office can assess it promptly; do not assume an enquiry has created a retainer.
