Don’t we all deserve a safe and secure place to call home? Meet Keeley. Keely is in her mid-twenties. She uses a wheelchair, relies on an oxygen machine and has four mental health diagnoses. She has couch surfed, lived in a group home, a long-term care facility and a hospital bed for most of her young adult life. Meet John. John had polio at 14 and a plane crash at 28 that severely damaged his legs and spine. The accident left John penniless and in a wheelchair. Meet Marcos. Marcos spent 35 years at sea under Communist rule. He escaped to Canada, worked minimum wage jobs and lived paycheck to paycheck to feed and raise his family who followed. He was left with little for retirement. Meet Crystal. Crystal is a young mother of four. She lived fearful day after day with unrelenting spousal abuse. For her and her children’s safely, she fled, with nothing but her children … for their safety and hers. Keeley, John, Marcos and Crystal now have a place to call home – no longer scared, cold or hungry; no longer plagued by crushing anxiety and hopelessness — thanks to RESOLVE’s Partner agencies. March 31, 2017 marks the end of the RESOLVE Campaign, a partnership of nine established and well-respected social service agencies, collaborating to build Calgary’s urgently needed affordable and supported rental housing, for up to 3,000 homeless and vulnerable Calgarians. You can help people like Keely, John, Marcos and Crystal. Text HOME to 30333 to donate $10, $20 or $25. Visit www.resolvecampaign.com for more information. Thank you for helping to provide our most vulnerable Calgarians with their safe place, their road to recovery, their sense of purpose, their dignity … their home.

PHOTOGRAPHY MENTOR, 2020 URBAN EXPOSURE PROJECT Now accepting volunteer applications for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Must be passionate about photography, storytelling, and inspiring others! If you’re interested in capturing local issues through photography—and playing a leadership role in the company of like-minded people—we’re looking for people like you! Individuals with a photography background, such as professional photographers or photography instructors, are encouraged to apply to be a volunteer Photography Mentor. This is a rewarding chance to use your craft and talents to give back to the community through a social program called Urban Exposure Project (UEP). What is Urban Exposure Project? UEP is an annual photography program that invites participants to learn about social issues impacting our city, while learning how to tell stories through photography. The program includes technical photography training and explores topics like poverty, vulnerable kids, and community building. The program is open to all skill levels and at the end of the 10 week program, the participants’ work is showcased at a public exhibit. UEP is a Gen Next initiative, a United Way program that brings together people in their 20s and 30s to do local good. What is the opportunity? As a UEP Photography Mentor, you will learn about the issues affecting our city, and use your technical expertise to mentor UEP participants. As a natural leader, you will be comfortable creating and building relationships with passionate individuals that are honing their own photography skills. In addition, your valuable contributions will be recognized at the public exhibit in the spring. Apply at calgaryunitedway.org/do-local-good/gen-next/

I hope this finds you well. I wanted to reach out to inform you of the social purpose program launched by Canopy Growths at the end of last year – Tweed Collective. Tweed Collective is a social purpose initiative that funds community impact projects across Canada. Grants are offered to charitable organizations – Non Profits, Registered Charities and BIAs, like yourselves who are working every day to make their communities a better place for everyone. To be considered for support, organizations must be working towards one of Tweed Collective’s three impact pillars which are: Grow Opportunities: Local communities prosper when residents have access to opportunity. We invest in projects and programs that develop and enhance skills to help more Canadians find their path to prosperity. Grow Greener: Greening and cleaning initiatives help build our understanding of the planet and the role that we play in sustainability. We fund projects that bring people together to learn, act and share to create a greener future for all. Grow Connections: A sense of belonging brings purpose to our lives and is key to building vibrant communities. We support programs and projects that encourage connectivity through shared interests, improved accessibility, and the creation of welcoming public spaces. Through Tweed Collective, our goal is to give back to the communities that we are a part of while being mindful of Canopy Growth’s role in society; as community members and neighbours in 2020 and the future. I’d like to invite you to visit www.tweedcollective.com/faq/ for more details on the program if you are thinking of submitting a grant application. If you have any further questions about the process please feel free to reach out to me for support. The Tweed Collective application will be open for submissions until February 20th, 2020. Have a great day! Alexis

Volunteer Position: Support and Accountability Worker

Are you a mature, empathetic person with a heart to contribute to safer communities by accompanying people who want to change their lives for the better? If so, then this might just be the volunteer opportunity for you! Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA) is a community-based, restorative justice program of Mennonite Central Committee Alberta. CoSA assists in the safe integration of people with histories of sexual offending as they come back into the community after incarceration. Our clients (who we call “core members”) are individuals who have voluntarily sought help, have little (or no) social support, and desire to lead responsible, meaningful, and crime-free lives. CoSA has been in Canada for over 25 years and has been shown to help reduce rates of re-offence (see http://cosacanada.com/documents/cosa-canada-research). Social isolation and a lack of positive relationships are two significant risk factors in sexual re-offending. CoSA addresses this gap by forming “circles,” which are groups of three to five screened and trained volunteers from the community who befriend a core member, offer them social and emotional support, and hold them accountable. This happens through weekly group meetings and interactions, which are guided by an agreement that specifies expectations, boundaries, commitments, and goals. On average, it is 1-4 hours per week and we ask for a commitment of a year. CoSA is a great way to meaningfully and significantly contribute to safer and healthier communities. If this is an opportunity that interests you, or if you would simply like more information about CoSA, we would love to hear from you!
