Shakespeare in Love February 1 – 9, 2019 This charming evocation of another time and place takes us back to Elizabethan England, to witness the early career of one William Shakespeare. Our beloved bard is in a slump when we meet him, experiencing a stubborn case of writer's block while producers demand pages. He forces himself to the work, holding auditions for a play not yet written – and then he meets Viola de Lesseps, disguised as male actor Thomas Kent, and their world is turned upside down. Where there were no words, now the words flow with ease on the wings of love. Romeo and Juliet is written before us, as our star-crossed lovers face the cruel realities of the world. Can Shakespeare survives the drama of being hunted by an angry fiance? Can he ever hope to please his impatient producers? Can Will and Viola bring true love to the stage before she is forced into marriage with another man? Adapted from the Oscar winning movie by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, Shakespeare in Love will delight and inspire as only the poetry and art of Shakespeare can. Bad weather has affected this year’s climbing season, and now multiple expeditions are attempting to summit Everest on the same day. A bottleneck of climbers has delayed the progress of Rob Hall’s group, and he now finds himself near the top of the mountain with his client Doug Hansen, long after the agreed turnaround time has passed. Unbeknown to the two mountaineers, a ferocious storm is brewing below. Meanwhile, further down the mountain, another of Rob’s clients, Beck Weathers, lies unconscious as the storm rages around him. Everest the opera will move, inspire and enthrall you. Immortal Beloved is the Civic's contribution to Valentine's day. This third concert of the 2018 - 2019 season will offer musical favourites to treat the love of your life! You'll enjoy “For Home” by Kevin Lau, "Vocalise" by Rachmaninoff and the famous Irish Tune from County Derry (Danny Boy) in a wonderful arrangement by Percy Grainger. The first half of the concert is completed by Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, a most romantic symphony indeed. The second movement "Allegretto" evokes in the listener feelings of longing and tenderness. It received an instant encore when it was first performed in 1813 and still does today! It took Tchaikovsky 10 years to write "Romeo and Juliet" and its main love theme is so recognizable. It has been used in many TV shows and movies. The third concert of our 2018 – 2019 season, Immortal Beloved takes place on Sunday, February 10th at 2:30 pm at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. The pre-concert chat will commence at 1:45 pm. Maestro Rolf Bertsch conducts the Civic as we launch the concert performing Lau’s For Home, followed by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. After our brief intermission, the orchestra will treat you to Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry and Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise. the concert will be brought to a close with Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary’s volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant!
