Welcome to the sleepy town of Salem Massachusetts, 1692. Bathsheba Moore was always the outcast- living in the woods, keeping to herself. The townsfolk thought she was insane, and they underestimated her power. Shunned and ostracized, Bathsheba’s interest in witchcraft and the occult grew. She found that she had incredible talents and she embraced the dark arts. Her power grew stronger and she knew she had to take back the town. One night, she entered the town and found the cabin of little Lyca Goode and her family. Killing Lyca’s mother was just too easy, but Bathsheba had other plans for Lyca. She would use Lyca to infiltrate the town, drive the townsfolk mad with fear, and turn them against each other. Possessing the girl was more challenging that Bathsheba had counted on- the girl had powers of her own. Now the town is plagued by an evil infestation that turns neighbor against neighbor, sister against sister, and Salem will never be the same. The Coven by Haunted Calgary is Calgary's largest yard haunt, and one of the longest-running. About 25 years into haunting, this volunteer-run haunt offers up some of the best scares in the city, including a giant animatronic monster you'd expect to see at Universal Studios, not in someone's yard! The haunt takes most groups approximately 30 minutes to walk through and it's all outdoors so dress warm! Over 800 volunteer hours go in to building the haunt and acting so that all proceeds can be donated to charity. A suggested donation of $10 for Oops-a-Dazy Rescue and a few cans of food for the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank per person is recommended, but the charities are really happy to receive whatever donation you can manage. Full scare version is open October 30, 31, and November 1 from 6-10pm at 222 Rocky Ridge Bay NW. Little kids can come through for a low scare event (no actors) October 31 and November 1 from 12-5pm. Don't forget to trick or treat with the wicked witch to get your candy!

Luminous Voices, Calgary’s professional choir, launches its 2014/15 season with “The Far West” - a world premiere by Calgary composer Zachary Wadsworth. Praised for its “evocative mixture of old and new,” his music has been heard in venues around the world, from the Kennedy Center in Washington to Takinogawa Hall in Tokyo to Carnegie Hall in New York. Wadsworth’s new work will feature tenor soloist, American-Canadian Lawrence Wiliford, with string orchestra and choir. Commissioned by James and Elaine Hutchison, this powerful cantata addresses the AIDS crisis through poems of Tim Dlugos, who died of the disease in 1990 while studying to become a priest. Through this work, Luminous Voices honours those affected by AIDS, past, present and future. The concert also features Bach's famous Cantata No. 39 - Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot (Break your bread for the hungry). This work is a spellbinding example of Bach's genius in connecting music and text. Luminous Voices is a collaborative ensemble, bringing together singers from around the country to join with some of Calgary's top vocal talent. This unique mixture of artists leads to vital and fresh interpretations of great choral music.

ACWS is issuing a call for male leaders in business, industry, sport, media, culture and government to lead change...and come join us for breakfast! Join Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson and special guests for a hearty breakfast of inspiring conversation with a side of informative audience participation. Your eggs and bacon will be served with an interactive presentation led by Daryl Fort of MVP Strategies, trainer of the Eskimos and Stampeders for the Leading Change: The Alberta CFL Project. Daryl has mobilized the U.S. Marines, Air Force, and the Departments of Navy and Defence to recognize abusive behaviours towards women in every-day scenarios and interrupt them--and now he’s showing you! Since 2005, the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) has been inviting leading men for breakfast to learn about the prevalence of violence against women, and talk about what they can do to make positive change. The Breakfast with the Guys event has been replicated around the world as a powerful way to inspire and support all men to take a stand on this critical social issue. Each year, we create a new conversation that has men asking, “What kind of world do I want my daughter, partner, mother, friends to live in?” Out of this think-tank has evolved new legislation, powerful prevention collaborations, tuned-in workplaces and new supporters for women’s shelters and ACWS. The most important outcome is that the Breakfasts help male leaders see how leveraging their sphere of influence and modelling behaviors in small ways, every day, is the most impactful way to end women-abuse for the long-term. Please join us for a beautiful performance, highlighting the sensual music of Latin America and the Caribbean! With guest artists from the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and soprano Katie McCullough. All proceeds go towards supporting MusAid's 2015 projects in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Belize. There will also be a bar, a raffle, and silent auction, with handicraft items collected from our work in Thailand, Vietnam, El Salvador, Belize, and Haiti. Latin America has been identified as one of the most dangerous regions in the world, with high homicide rates, and prevalent gang violence. For many of the students in this region, music is a way to redirect their energy towards a positive and creative medium, and a safe place of comfort and community.

Travellers Come and be counted! CHRISTMAS IN BETHLEHEM awaits you! What is Christmas in Bethlehem? Well, put simply, it is a free opportunity, in our time, to experience what happened in Bethlehem when Christ was born. This year marks the FINAL interactive “Christmas in Bethlehem”. The entire event is once again coordinated by Melissa Adrian, who has successfully manned the helm from the very beginning of this exciting adventure four years ago. The town of Bethlehem has been created in the gymnasium of Bow Valley Christian Church, complete with a living nativity! This unique, interactive journey through the streets of Jerusalem and Bethlehem during the census and on the night that Baby Jesus was born brings alive the times of the census under King Herod’s rule. An angel choir sings from the heavens, Roman soldiers patrol the streets while the Rabbi tells stories to the village children. Near the market you will find the Inn, the Innkeeper, his wife and the lowly manger where Jesus was born. You will get to meet Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus! You can pet the famous donkey that Mary rode into town. The Shepherds are there telling their story of the Saviour’s birth and of the angels who spoke to them. The market place is alive as people arrive in Bethlehem for the census. Villagers are everywhere, children are playing, dancers appear, the tax collector, census takers and exotic characters from other lands show up and provide volunteers and visitors alike, with the pulse, rhythm and unique flavour of the streets of Bethlehem on the night Jesus was born. In the main foyer of the church, you can wander through part of Jerusalem and the courtyard of Herod’s palace. You can rest in a cafe while enjoying free treats and view the entertainment that the Queen has engaged to perform in the palace to please her King – Herod the Great! “Christmas in Bethlehem” is a “save the date” event for your family calendar this Christmas season! Solid Rock Baptist Church of Calgary recently held evangelistic meetings in six different parts of the Philippines. The meeting places included Tacloban which was devastated by Typhoon Hayian (Yolanda) in November of last year. The response to these meetings was very enthusiastic with about one hundred and fifty Filipino pastors from independent Baptist churches and many more persons in attendance. Seven preachers from the United States and Canada spoke at the Pastor's School in Tagaytay (near Manila) to conclude the series of gospel meetings that were held in Bicol, Tacloban, Iloilo City, Baladjay (Antique) and Davao (Mindanao) over a five week period. Over seven hundred Filipinos came to this meeting and nearly fifty persons from Solid Rock Baptist Church in Calgary, Canada. Many lives were changed as a result of the strong preaching. Another Pastor's School will be conducted in February 2015 to provide ongoing encouragement and help for the pastors and churches in the Philippines.
