Our opening film of the Winter 2017 season is the fascinating documentary "In the shadow of the hill" In the lead up to the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, the Brazilian government initiates a series of ‘pacification’ programs, aimed at retaking territories previously controlled by heavily armed drug trafficking armies. In November 2011, Rio de Janeiro’s largest slum ‘Rocinha’ is seized without a single shot fired. Shortly after the intervention, reports begin to emerge of rampant police abuse, which culminate in the disappearance of local bricklayer Amarildo de Souza. Amarildo was last seen being taken by the police for questioning, and his family believes that he has been tortured and murdered by the police. In the face of brutal oppression, together the residents start a protest movement that will shake the Brazilian establishment to the core. ‘IN THE SHADOW OF THE HILL’ offers a fascinating and often brutal insight into life inside Brazil’s largest slum ‘Rocinha’. First time director Dan Jackson offers a stunning portrait of a community that is as vibrant and inspiring as it is violent and barbaric. It is a story of David and Goliath, of empowerment, and ultimately a celebration of the amazing fortitude and resilience of the human spirit. A film by Dan Jackson 30 minutes Q&A to follow the screening. Admission is free for students with ID, and for the community with donation (cash or non-perishable foods) to the food bank.  Seating is limited so please arrive early.

On February 5th, join the Calgary Civic Symphony as we look toward the coming of spring and the Easter Season. Feel the power of the combined force of 300 musicians on stage to bring you Mahler’s favorite, monumental and spiritually inspiring “Resurrection” Symphony. Brahms’ rarely heard Alto Rhapsody leads the program with a text that brings a metaphysical portrayal of a antisocial being who is urged to find spiritual sustenance and throw off the shackles of his suffering; which has powerful parallels in Brahms's own life and character. Clara Schumann said of the work, “This piece seems to me neither more nor less than the expression of his own heart's anguish." The concert will be under the direction of Conductor Rolf Bertsch and will feature sopranno Laura Brandt and contralto Heather Meyers, supported by the voices of the Mount Royal Kantorei, Cum Vino Cantus, University of Calgary Chamber Choir, University of Calgary Chorus, Festival Chorus, St. Mary's University Chorus and the Ukrainian Male Chorus of Edmonton. To enhance the orchestral presentation, the Calgary Civic Symphony will be joined by members of the University of Calgary Orchestra and the Calgary Youth Orchestra.

Downstage and Forte Musical Theatre with the generous support of Hit & Myth Productions proudly present the World Premiere of CRIME DOES NOT PAY by David Rhymer and Kris Demeanor Directed by Simon Mallett March 2-5 & 7-11, 2017 @ 7:30pm With a matinee Saturday, March 11 @ 2:00pm Engineered Air Theatre, Arts Commons (225 8 Avenue SE) Recommended for ages 16 & up Recognized internationally for work that is incisive, heartwrenching and darkly funny, Calgarians David Rhymer and Kris Demeanor have spun a true story into a brand-new musical that will plant gorgeous songs and explosive ideas in your head. Bob arrives in the big city in the late 1940s with a sketchbook full of comics about how the little guy always gets pushed into the dirt by corporations and politicians, but publishers say there’s no money in bleeding hearts. When Bob falls for Violet, a lounge singer with an abusive ex-husband, inspiration strikes! He gets his big break after sexing up his stories with ‘babes and blood’ - dark depictions of true crimes where the criminals are the heroes, in a hot new title called "Crime Does Not Pay". The comics become an overnight sensation but inspire a backlash from children’s advocate Eleanor Flood, who claims their racy content is spurring horrible copycat crimes. Turns out that the trappings of success, the threat of censorship and Bob’s possessive love of Violet make for one dangerous cocktail... Five years in the making, Crime Does Not Pay is one racket you’ll want to get in on! A HEADS UP: Crime Does Not Pay includes material that some people may find upsetting or triggering, including profanity, sexual innuendo, scenes of domestic violence, and references to suicide. If you would like to learn more about the content of the show before attending, please feel free to contact us.
