WHISPERS IN THE DARK BY ANNA CUMMER, BASED ON THE A PAIR OF HANDS BY ARTHUR QUILLER-COUCH Every house has secrets… January 25- February 23, 2020 World Premiere Miss Elizabeth Le Petyt, an aspiring author, ventures to Cornwall to escape her hectic London life. The cottage she chooses has a mysterious past, and seems like the perfect inspiration for her writing. However, misplaced items, inexplicable events and whispers in the dark disrupt her solace, and have her questioning her sanity. Is this her own past coming back to haunt her, or is she getting too close to discovering the cottage’s secrets. WHISPERS IN THE DARK is a haunting tale inspired by Victorian ghost stories.

Every February, Heart & Stroke has our “Heart Month” canvass campaign nationwide, including right here in Calgary as well as other towns and cities in Southern Alberta. Join our team of volunteer canvassers to help share important information about heart disease and stroke with the community, as well as collect donations that contribute immensely to our mission. Essentially, this February 2020, you would have the entire month to find time to canvass an assigned route in your neighbourhood, or an area of the city you prefer. The routes typically take an hour or two to complete and you have the whole month to choose a time that best works for you. If you prefer to not knock on your neighbours doors, we have what’s called a “friends and family” kit, which is similar, but you would canvass people you know, such as your friends and family. Alternatively, you can also do what is called online canvassing. This is fundraising done online. you would have a personal fundraising page set up that you can provide a link to people who can support your fundraising efforts for Heart & Stroke. I would love to provide you with more information, if you have any questions, or to apply for this opportunity, please do not hesitate to reach out to Justin Leeson; justin.leeson@heartandstroke.ca or 403-351-7071. We look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

Our country music pop-up is back for February 2020 and, this time, we've got our sights set on love just in time for Valentine's Day. About this Event With a lightly refreshed name (but still the same amount of syllables), The Blue Jay Sessions are back at the Oak Tree Tavern for four fun nights of live music from Feb. 12-15. 32 musicians from Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C. will take turns performing over the course of four nights in two sessions of songwriters circles. In-between their performances, musicians will share the stories behind original songs. Seeing that we're popping up around Valentine's Day, it only seems fair to have them work with themes of love and heartbreak...and happy singledom too! We're working with a playful theme of "finding love" for our 1st sessions and "heartbreak and singledom" for the 2nd sessions, so whether you're looking to have a fun date night or hear a romantic relationship dissolve via song, we've got you covered! (we also promise both sessions will be equally fun, theme-aside. You know us!) In addition to great tunes, our Blue Jay Sessions menu will offer up a fun menu with dishes like beer cheese fondue, spaghetti and meatballs for two (a la Lady & The Tramp), chocolate cake with cherry whiskey compote and more. To wash it all down, there will be Russell Brewing Co. brews and some Jack Daniels-spiked winter drinks to keep you nice and cozy! Hi-balls and wine available as well, of course.

“To me, fair friend, you never can be old, For as you were when first your eye I eyed, Such seems your beauty still.” What if Romeo and Juliet had lived? This is the question posed in this delicate and profound “remix” of the greatest love story ever told. The premise is simple – rather than taking their own lives, the young lovers have grown old together, their dazzling love undimmed, to endure a tragedy of a different sort. Shakespeare’s timeless poetry creates a new, deeply romantic and powerful play, and a strikingly different love story. A TENDER THING is co-produced with The Shakespeare Company. Trail Blazer Breakfast is the annual marquee fundraiser hosted by Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF), that provides an opportunity to connect thought-leaders, innovators, philanthropists, influencers and entrepreneurs in Calgary – people who aren’t afraid to blaze new trails and leverage joint resources and expertise in order to collectively address the complex social issues of poverty and homelessness in our city. Keynote Speaker: Lieutenant-General (ret) The Honourable Roméo A. Dallaire As a military commander, humanitarian, senator or author, Roméo Dallaire has elevated our national consciousness. Whether shining a light on the atrocities of the Rwandan genocide; the struggle that he and many other military veterans face with post-traumatic stress disorder; or the recruitment and use of child soldiers, he has felt compelled to set aside his natural reserve to bring national and international attention to situations too often ignored. We invite you to be a part of this event and experience a true force of transformative action as he shares impactful leadership lessons and thoughts on the need for trailblazing in Canada - specifically in the areas of mental health and homelessness. Ride Don’t Hide is a nationwide community bike ride raising funds for mental health. Ride Don’t Hide is a movement that brings mental health into the open. Ride Don’t Hide is the largest mental health bike ride in Canada with almost 10,000 riders and hundreds more family members, friends and volunteers across Canada taking part, raising almost $2 million each year for the Canadian Mental Health Association. Starting in 2020, June is Ride Don't Hide month, a chance to bring mental health into the open, raise critical funds for vital mental health programs, and connect -- to your own mental health, to each other, to our community, and to the national movement for mental health! All registrations include a free tech tee for riders. This year, instead of a registration fee, we are encouraging all riders 16 and over to commit to fundraising $100. If you raise $100, your $65 registration will be waived. Children will still ride free.
