Everyone loves a behind-the-scenes experience — be it film, the theatre or opera. Perhaps opera has a particular allure because it combines high production values, extravagant music, and grand visuals. As a way of engaging you in this special world, Calgary Opera offers a fun and informative evening prior to the opening of each mainstage production. Taste of the Opera is exactly that, a ‘taste’ of each of the upcoming shows — a panel discussion with some of the opera’s key cast and/or creative team, a short performance and a Q&A period. The evening culminates with a taste of food and drink from the region in which the featured opera takes place. Tickets are $30.00 Tickets are discounted if you purchase a subscription for all three Tastes! Doors Open at 6:00 PM, Panel Begins at 7:00 PM Mamdani Opera Centre: 1315 - 7 Street SW, Calgary, AB T2R 1A5 Taste of the Opera: The Barber of Seville November 10th, 2017 Taras Kulish, Interim Artistic Director, Host Heather Moore, Head of Wardrobe discussing the storytelling through costuming. In collaboration with Julian Brown. Clark Rockefeller is a real life conman of the highest order, now serving a near-life sentence in a California State prison, and iconic musician and provocateur Torquil Campbell wants to try him on for size. What does it mean for an excellent fabulator to embody an excellent fabulator? And in the end, does an intricate con differ that much from a successful work of art? Entirely scripted or absolutely extemporaneous, TRUE CRIME is a mind-twisting encounter with an artist obsessed with how we all fake it, one way or another.

Tickets @ https://straightcurve.eventbrite.ca Please join Silver Linings Foundation on Friday, February 2, during Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2018, for the screening of the documentary "Straight/Curve: Redefining Body Image", followed by a panel and audience discussion. Ninety percent of women and young girls say they do not feel represented in the fashion industry or in media, and that the imagery they are bombarded with makes them feel “disgusting” and “less than”. Silver Linings knows that damaged self-worth can increase one's vulnerability to the development of an eating disorder. The important new documentary "Straight/Curve: Redefining Body Image" examines the industries and obstacles responsible for this body image crisis and showcases the dynamic leaders fighting to redefine society's dangerous standards of beauty.

Poppy Innovations, together with the South Health Campus and the Calgary Health Trust, are hosting the first ever KIDS COOKING FOR KIDS fundraiser in support of the Emergency Pediatric Pod at South Health Campus. This event will feature twelve kids cooking their very own chicken soup recipes, to be judged by a panel of local personalities. This event will help raise funds for the Emergency Pediatric Pod through the purchase of tickets for sampling the kids’ soups during the Soup Tasting and the purchase of the Kids Cooking For Kids Recipe Book containing the recipes from all the kids who entered to be part of this cook off. We also believe that by showcasing the ability of our youngsters to engage in healthy cooking, this event will inspire their peers to do the same. Since opening their doors in 2013, South Health Campus has provided pediatric emergency care to thousands of families. Currently, Emergency Pediatric Physicians provide care in four dedicated beds in South Health Campus’ emergency room. Now, we have an opportunity to build a special space that would be customized to serve the 25% of patients that come through South Health Campus’ emergency room doors – kids! Calgary Health Trust is raising $3.9 million to make this idea into a reality. Cooking begins at 11:00am to 12:30 pm followed immediately by the judging, and then public Soup Tasting will be open from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. We are also thrilled to have the support of amazing celebrity judges who will be selecting the top 3 soups made at the Cook-off. Our celebrity judges include Top-Chef Canada All-Stars winner, Co-owner of Cluck ‘n Cleaver and Owner of Nicole Gourmet, Nicole Gomes; Canadian food writer, columnist and one of Calgary’s top foodies, Dan Clapson; Calgary’s Fire Chief Steve Dongworth; and Calgary Stampeder Charleston Hughes.

Lost Kin-ection is the journey of a girl who has grown up in foster care. As an adult she finds a memento from her birth family and is sent on a journey through her childhood and youth. The story unravels through her eyes and those who loved or impacted her. It follows her cycle of trauma, hurt, anger, acceptance, healing, and growth as she develops her identity and what family means to her. Her relatable struggles of healing through connection and belonging come to life through dance, live music, and projection. Join En Corps Dance Collective as they express the value of family diversity through a Lost Kin-ection. “Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story.” – Josh Shipp

Following the exceptional audience reviews of "Icetime" and "The Hockey Sweater" the Calgary Civic Symphony presents their winter "getaway" concert — FESTIVAL DA MÚSICA — on Sunday, February 11th at 2:30 pm at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. The concert features the music of Arturo Márquez of Mexico; Julián Orbón of Cuba; Heitor Villa-Lobos of Brazil; and Astor Piazzolla and Alberto Ginastera of Argentina. In bringing the heat of this music to the Jack Singer, the Civic is joined by guest artists the U of C String Quartet, soprano Michelle Minke and accordionist Penny Sanborn. As part of our special warm up the winter event, the musicians will be joined by tango dancers and teachers Leo Sato and Marina Gonzalez of Tango Calgary (www.tangocalgary.com) A special pre-concert treat at 1:45 pm will feature students from Tango Calgary and members of the audience may be given the opportunity to achieve their secret desire to learn to tango! The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary’s volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant! In fact, the Civic is often confused with Calgary’s other—but professional—orchestra.

Get into the music! His Grade 6 report card states:  “John has the potential to be an excellent student but must fight the urge to make a joke out of absolutely everything.”  Today John’s mantra states, "You’re dead a long time, so you better get out there and make something beautiful.”   Perhaps it’s the growing list of accolades, which these days include a Juno nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Galaxie Rising Star Award and a Kerrville New Folk title, or perhaps it’s the lofty comparisons reviewers have made to Tom Russell, W.O. Mitchell and Margaret Laurence. Whatever it is, Lethbridge, AB based, folk-‐roots musician, John Wort Hannam is making music with a new-found confidence these days. 15 years into his career and he is far and away writing his best material yet. John has released 6 recordings in 13 years with performance highlights that include a win at the Kerrville, Texas New Folk Song Competition, collaborating with the Calgary Philharmonic, composing the 50th Anniversary song for his alma mater, University of Lethbridge, composing the 2012 Alberta Winter Games official song and playing the 2012 Olympic Summer Games. New record coming Winter 2017.
