YYC POP will be curated by a jury of professional writers, and selected portraits will be included in a hard copy anthology being published by Frontenac House next year. You don’t have to be a writer to submit, and YYC POP is open to everyone living in Calgary, the greater Calgary area, and ex-pats! Christmas is coming and little Ralphie really wants a BB gun. His “Old Man” wins a tacky leg lamp that his Mom is none too happy about. The furnace explodes. And the neighbourhood dogs steal the turkey right out of the oven. It’s a crazy family Christmas where everything that could possibly go wrong, does. Based on the classic film, this throwback 1950’s Christmas comes with all the old-fashioned family fun and fixings. ‘Tis the season to come be entertained by this holiday favourite!

Fabulous Canadian Folk Music with Celtic, Bluegrass & Gospel flavours. Enjoy a heart-warming show filled with music, merriment, and mayhem as Saskia and Darrel deliver a fun and unpredictable series of songs that change every time you see them. They delight their audience with tales about grain elevators, war brides, patchwork quilts, and history makers such as Louis Riel and David Thompson. They will share some sweet songs about their own spiritual journey plus they might break into Swiss yodeling, or sing in Gaelic, Dutch, German, or French. This is true Canadiana; real songs, drenched in our culture and heritage delivered in comfortable highly skilled sets with oodles of self-poking humour. A taste of Celtic, a dab of Bluegrass, a touch of Folk, all wrapped around extremely beautiful melodies. The cottage she chooses has a mysterious past, and seems like the perfect inspiration for her writing. Every February, Heart & Stroke has our “Heart Month” canvass campaign nationwide, including right here in Calgary as well as other towns and cities in Southern Alberta. Join our team of volunteer canvassers to help share important information about heart disease and stroke with the community, as well as collect donations that contribute immensely to our mission. Essentially, this February 2020, you would have the entire month to find time to canvass an assigned route in your neighbourhood, or an area of the city you prefer. The routes typically take an hour or two to complete and you have the whole month to choose a time that best works for you. If you prefer to not knock on your neighbours doors, we have what’s called a “friends and family” kit, which is similar, but you would canvass people you know, such as your friends and family. Alternatively, you can also do what is called online canvassing. This is fundraising done online. you would have a personal fundraising page set up that you can provide a link to people who can support your fundraising efforts for Heart & Stroke. I would love to provide you with more information, if you have any questions, or to apply for this opportunity, please do not hesitate to reach out to Justin Leeson; justin.leeson@heartandstroke.ca or 403-351-7071. We look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

“To me, fair friend, you never can be old, For as you were when first your eye I eyed, Such seems your beauty still.” What if Romeo and Juliet had lived? This is the question posed in this delicate and profound “remix” of the greatest love story ever told. The premise is simple – rather than taking their own lives, the young lovers have grown old together, their dazzling love undimmed, to endure a tragedy of a different sort. Shakespeare’s timeless poetry creates a new, deeply romantic and powerful play, and a strikingly different love story. A TENDER THING is co-produced with The Shakespeare Company. Trail Blazer Breakfast is the annual marquee fundraiser hosted by Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF), that provides an opportunity to connect thought-leaders, innovators, philanthropists, influencers and entrepreneurs in Calgary – people who aren’t afraid to blaze new trails and leverage joint resources and expertise in order to collectively address the complex social issues of poverty and homelessness in our city. Keynote Speaker: Lieutenant-General (ret) The Honourable Roméo A. Dallaire As a military commander, humanitarian, senator or author, Roméo Dallaire has elevated our national consciousness. Whether shining a light on the atrocities of the Rwandan genocide; the struggle that he and many other military veterans face with post-traumatic stress disorder; or the recruitment and use of child soldiers, he has felt compelled to set aside his natural reserve to bring national and international attention to situations too often ignored. We invite you to be a part of this event and experience a true force of transformative action as he shares impactful leadership lessons and thoughts on the need for trailblazing in Canada - specifically in the areas of mental health and homelessness.
